Expanding Services Pays Dividends

Northern California company boosts revenues with an M-Series loader for pavement restoration

When the horizontal directional drilling market fizzled 10 years ago, Arrow Construction employees looked to diversify their services by adding a concrete and paving restoration division. Since then, the company has grown from 16 employees to about 100, and owns multiple compact loaders and attachments.

Owners Mike Wegener and Sal Rivera previously operated another brand of compact loaders before they had an opportunity to try a new Bobcat® M-Series loader. A representative from Bobcat West introduced them to the new S630 and they couldn't be happier with the machine's performance; so much so that they purchased the unit for their pavement restoration projects.

"We have asphalt and concrete paving contracts with our local power supplier, PG&E, and we complete patch-paving projects for them," Rivera says. Arrow Construction crews combine a Bobcat asphalt planer attachment with the S630 loader to efficiently grind the asphalt before a new patch is installed. "Our new S630 is definitely much stronger with more power than our previous loaders," Rivera says. "We get more done and don't spend as much time on each location."

Arrow Construction is based in Sacramento, Calif., and does pavement restoration, which has become a significant portion of the company's revenue. Instead of utility companies repairing pavement themselves, they've learned to call on Arrow Construction because of the company's reliable service and attention to detail. "Instead of operating a saw cutter, we'll use our Bobcat loader to grind out a square and re-patch it with hot mix asphalt," Wegener says.

"Our M-Series loader is quieter, and we like how the hydraulic couplers are integrated into the loader's lift arm and the new hose routing system. That's something our mechanics noticed right away when we had our demonstration. The mechanics love it because it's a lot easier to service, specifically the engine compartment."

Increased production

"We've boosted our production even more because the M-Series loader has high-flow auxiliary hydraulics," Rivera says. "We're getting more production out of the machine when we're planing."

Rivera's operators have been particularly pleased with the M-Series improvements. "There's better visibility to the work area with the redesigned cab, which is important to us when we're operating the planer," Rivera explains. "We can eliminate one person who previously watched the planer and gave directions to the operator. We're saving 10 percent of the cost of the patch by having just one operator on-site.
