Bobcat utility vehicles came out on top as the brand of choice for the Tampa, Fla., police department. The department purchased 18 Bobcat 3400XL utility vehicles for security purposes during the 2012 Republication National Convention, held in Tampa August 27 30.

Bobcat of Tampa assisted with a demonstration of the Bobcat 3400XL. The model was compared to two other brands. After a three-hour demo, the Tampa police department selected the Bobcat utility vehicle because of its tilt steering, nerf bars (running bars) and storage capacity in the cargo box. The tilt steering ensured the SWAT team had enough room to comfortably sit and drive the vehicles in their protective gear. They also tested to make sure the kennel of Tampa police department's police dog could be loaded into the rear storage area.

The Tampa police department operated the Bobcat utility vehicles for crowd management, safety and security duties during the convention. The City of Tampa used a U.S. Department of Justice grant for the purchase, and bought the vehicles through the National Joint Powers Alliance cooperative, a municipal contract purchasing agency.
