Bobcat of Akron, Bobcat of Canton, Bobcat of Cleveland, Bobcat of Rootstown, Bobcat of Wooster and Bobcat of Youngstown are run by the Leppo clan. Glenn Leppo is the fourth member of his family to run the Bobcat enterprise with multiple locations in northeastern Ohio and more than 90 employees.
The Leppo group has indeed had great success with the family business; they were even featured in the Small Business section of the Wall Street Journal last year for that reason.
In 1945 Roy and Stella Leppo founded Leppo Equipment in Akron, Ohio as an Oliver farm equipment dealer. In 1946 their son Dick joined the company and over time the area had less and less farmers to serve and more construction. So in 1972 they took on the Bobcat® equipment line.
Roy ran the business for more than 25 years, after which time, Dick took over. Dale then bought the store from his father and as time went on, Glenn took on more and more responsibility and bought most of the company from his brother. “I call myself the 3 ½ generation owner, since Dale is 11 ½ years older than me” says Glenn.
The dealership focuses on sales, rental and product support of Bobcat loaders, excavators, compact track loaders, attachments and now compact tractors. “The availability of parts and knowledgeable service technicians is a key part of the company’s success,” says Leppo. “All service technicians are factory trained, and many of the parts personnel have decades of experience in providing parts quickly and efficiently. Several employees have been with the company since they were teenagers and now have over 30 years with us and one technician just celebrated 40 years.”
When asked what it takes to keep a business going for so many years, Leppo said, “First and foremost it takes great people.” Family has been a part of that tradition as Dale’s wife, Cindy, and Glenn’s wife, Karen, and son, Mike, all work for the company as did Roy’s wife, Stella, and Dick’s wife, Thelma. “There are a great number of people who support us, family included,” says Glenn.
To that end, Glenn and Dale are preparing the next generation of Bobcat enthusiasts to take over the family business. “We are a few years away from making the call to pass it on to one of my sons, so we are in the transition stages of passing it on to someone not named Leppo to manage for awhile under my ownership. In 15 years or so, both of my sons should be able to decide whether they want to continue the family tradition,” he explains.
Glenn is excited about the events and celebrations coming in 2008. “The 50th Anniversary of Bobcat symbolizes a great long term relationship between us,” he says. “We are hosting the road tour at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, so for me it means the first time visiting the hall of fame and I’m excited about that too!”
Glenn says that Bobcat’s long term success also symbolizes stability. “We used to represent many different lines of equipment and because Bobcat continues to broaden their product base, we are now able to focus on just the Bobcat product line to serve the needs of our customers,” notes Glenn.
In addition to hosting the Bobcat 50th Anniversary Road Tour this year, Leppo’s will also host an open house for the introduction of the compact tractor. “We plan to incorporate the 50th anniversary theme into that event as well,” says Glenn. “Bobcat has done a great job of leading the industry in equipment innovation and we are proud to be a part of that.”
The Bobcat of Canton Road Tour stop will be held at NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
