Guide To Tractor Sizes

Posted on April 30, 2025

Bobcat’s legacy is built on engineering the toughest equipment on land and hardscapes—and our lineup of sub-compact, compact, and utility tractors are no exception. Designed for general turf and property maintenance all the way to heavy-duty, large-scale tasks, these machines were designed for one thing: getting more done more efficiently. And given our impressive line-up, Bobcat has the right machine to take on whatever challenge you have in front of you.

So what’s the difference between sub-compact, compact, and utility tractors?

Tractors with engines under 25 hp are typically classified as sub-compact machines. Compact tractors are categorized as having between 25 and 60 hp engines, while Bobcat utility tractors are equipped with 60 to 73 hp engines. The primary advantage to larger horsepower engines can be found in the types of attachments and implements available for each tractor category. While smaller engines on a sub-compact tractor limit the level of the work they can perform, the smaller size enhances their ability to turn and maneuver in tight spaces.

Most sub-compact tractors have a limited, Category-1 three-point hitch for using implements. Compact tractors are equipped with a versatile, Category-1, three-point hitch and mid-PTO. Combined, they’re compatible with multiple attachments and implements allowing you to take on a bevy of challenges in any season from mowing, grading, digging, and snow removal. Utility tractors are equipped with a Category-2, three-point hitch rear PTO and one pair of standard rear remote hydraulic hookups providing the ultimate in attachment versatility.

21- to 25-horsepower sub-compact tractors

A sub-compact tractor is a good choice if you are looking for a machine to mow around homes, barns, trees and other obstacles. You can also use it for work like moving mulch and dirt with a front-end loader attachment or digging small holes with a backhoe attachment. If you need a machine with greater power to maintain your property, consider stepping up to a compact or utility tractor.

25- to 60-horsepower compact tractors

Most compact tractor brands offer models around 25 hp, 35 hp and 40 hp. These machines range in weight from around 1,500 lbs to more than 3,000 lbs. However, as the diesel engines get larger, the size of the tractor continues to increase. 45- to 60-horsepower compact tractors can range from 3,000 lbs to more than 6,000 lbs, often depending on whether they have a canopy or an enclosed cab.

Machines on the smaller end of this range (those with around 25 hp), are almost as maneuverable as sub-compact tractors and have greater lifting capacity with a front-end loader attachment for bigger jobs in the yard. Machines at this size can also have mid-PTO for center mounted implements.

As the horsepower increases, the more capable the tractor becomes at performing work such as preparing a garden or food plot with a tiller or grading a driveway with a box-blade.

Tractors in the 45- to 60-horsepower range can be thought of as small farm tractors. They have the horsepower to do larger work such as clearing and mowing overgrown fields, grading roads, clearing snow, and other common farm chores. Their increased size means that they are extremely versatile and capable.

60- to 73-horsepower utility tractors

Utility tractors are perfect for large properties ten acres or more and Ideal for tasks such as: towing heavy loads, hauling heavy material, handling hay bales while traversing long distances, mowing acres at a time and handling the deepest snowfalls.

With an impressive lift capacity of 3,898lbs, Bobcat utility tractors offer the ultimate in versatility and operator comfort. With open-air and cab offerings available, operators have the advantage of ergonomic controls, power and tilt steering, and an adjustable suspension seat. The optional cab comes equipped with window defrost, climate controls, and panoramic visibility.

Bobcat utility tractors also come standard with a rugged, 12x12 3-range power shuttle transmission, assuring 24/7/365-day productivity with improved ease of use in backward and forward movement.

What size tractor do I need?

What’s most important is that you consider two factors: where will the tractor be used, and what types of tasks do I need to perform. We suggest watching our Compact v.
