HOW TO CHOOSE EXCAVATOR BUCKET ATTACHMENTS

Having the proper Bobcat® excavator bucket turns every pass into real progress – digging cleaner, grading faster and handling material with confidence. Start with the types of tasks you do most, then match bucket style, width and mounting to your machine and ground conditions.

Start With Core Jobs

Think about what your excavator combined with a clamp does all week:

  • Digging utilities and foundations: Narrow, deep trenches, footings and service lines.
  • Finish grading and shaping: Slopes, ditches, pads and cleanup.
  • Heavy digging and tough ground: Deep cuts in dense soil and mixed material.
  • Handling bulky material: Brush, rock, demolition debris and awkward loads.

Grading Buckets

Choose a grading bucket when your focus is shaping and finishing.

It offers a smooth lip for finish grading and backfilling, along with a wide, low‑back profile with a longer bottom to improve cutting‑edge visibility and carry more material. A grading bucket is ideal for cleaning ditches, leveling pads, pulling slopes and final cleanup around structures.

On compact excavators, bucket choice starts with the factory-equipped coupler system. X-Change™ excavators require X-Change™ buckets built for that interface, while Pin Grabber–equipped excavators use pin-on buckets that are designed to work with the coupler for quick changes. On large excavators, heavy-duty grading buckets deliver added capacity for finish work and can be pinned on or used with a compatible quick coupler and thumb setup.

Trenching Buckets

Reach for a trenching bucket when you need depth, breakout force and a clean trench.

  • Narrow profiles that dig deep while maintaining strong breakout force and fast cycle times.
  • On compact excavators, available in pin‑on or X‑Change versions depending on your mounting system.

For larger excavators and backhoe loaders, step up to heavy‑duty trenching buckets in a range of widths (24-48 inches, depending on machine) to handle tough digging, heavier material and higher duty cycles.

Get the Right Mounting System

Your mounting system affects how fast you can swap tools — and how your excavator performs when digging, grading and working tight to structures.

Pin‑on buckets (Pin Grabber coupler or direct-mount)

  • Simple, strong and cost‑effective, a great choice when you run the same bucket most of the time.
  • Pin-on buckets can be used two ways: direct-mounted to the excavator arm or used with a Pin Grabber coupler for faster bucket changes.
  • Shovel mode: Pin-on buckets can be mounted in reverse for “shovel mode” digging when the job calls for it.

X‑Change buckets (compact excavators)

  • Fast bucket swaps with Bobcat’s exclusive X-Change™ interface and premium digging performance thanks to optimized geometry that helps maintain breakout force and improves vertical-wall digging compared to pin-grabber-style couplers.
  • Best for operators who switch often between trenching and grading buckets or or choose from a list of attachments like a breaker, drum mulcher, or auger.
  • Note: X-Change attachments cannot be mounted in reverse.

Quick couplers and thumbs (large excavators)

  • For large excavators, you can run heavy-duty buckets pinned on or use a Hydraulic Pin-Grabber coupler for faster changes, then add a thumb for more control when handling material.
  • Great for fleets that share buckets and attachments across machines and need fast changeovers.

Bottom line: If you’re swapping between multiple bucket sizes and a clamp, X-Change (compact excavators) or a Pin-Grabber coupler + thumb (large excavators) is usually the best path to more uptime and fewer interruptions. To explore compatible configurations, see the full lineup of Bobcat Excavator Attachment Systems & Couplers at bobcat.com

Size and Duty Level

Dial in your bucket size based on what you’re moving and where you’re working:

  • Trenching buckets: Trenching buckets utilize aggressive teeth. Match width to pipe or conduit size plus bedding and compaction requirements.
  • Grading buckets: Wider buckets cover more ground and leave smoother surfaces in fewer passes. Heavy‑duty grading buckets with extra capacity are ideal for serious material shaping and backfill work.
  • Duty level: Choose standard buckets for everyday soils and utility trenching. Step up to Heavy Duty buckets when the ground gets tougher and the job demands more. For abrasive material, rocky conditions and relentless digging, Severe Duty MX buckets deliver durability you can count on — day after day.

Always keep your excavator’s weight class and lift capacity in mind – oversizing the bucket can hurt performance and cycle times.

When to Add Three-Tine Grapple

The three‑tine grapple isn’t a digging bucket – it’s your excavator’s “iron jaws” for handling bulky material. Use it when you’re clearing land, pulling brush or debris, doing demolition work, or handling big landscape rocks.

You can also use it as a rake to pull material together, combine it with a hydraulic clamp (thumb) for more grip and control.

Quick Checklist

Before you pick a bucket setup, run through this:

  1. Primary work: Utilities, foundations, finish grading, site preparation, cleanup, land clearing or demo.
  2. Machine size: Compact excavator vs. large excavator vs. backhoe loader.
  3. Bucket style: Trenching, severe duty trenching, grading, heavy‑duty trenching or heavy‑duty grading.
  4. Mounting: Pin‑on, X‑Change system or quick coupler/thumb.
  5. Width and capacity: Driven by trench size, material volume and lift capacity.
  6. Material: Typical soil type, rock content and abrasion level.
  7. Handling needs: Need to grab and move bulky material (three‑tine grapple) or dig and grade.

Once you’ve answered those, your local Bobcat dealer can help you zero in on the exact trenching or grading bucket – along with a clamp or any other of Bobcat's extensive attachment selections – that keep your excavator digging, shaping and lifting at full potential.
