FR Series

• The Kawasaki FR Series are reliable, residential-grade engines designed for homeowners who want consistent power and easy ownership.
• The FR Series Engine is available on the ZT2000.


FS Series

• The Kawasaki FS Series is a heavier-duty v-twin engine built for use with improved durability and performance.
• The FS Series engines are available on the WB700 walk-behind mowers.


FT Series


• The Kawasaki FT Series of engines are commercial-grade, engineered for longer run times and tougher workloads than the residential platforms.

FX Series

EFI Engines


• Bobcat also offers a lineup of Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) engines available on select, commercial models. These engines deliver instant start, consistent power and improved efficiency. They also require reduced maintenance.


All-Electric Powertrain


• It’s also worth noting that Bobcat offers an All-Electric Powertrain on our ZT6000e, with zero-emission and battery-powered operation for noise-sensitive and environmentally focused applications, with fewer wear components and simplified maintenance.

It all depends on what your definition of large yard is and what the conditions are.

Generally speaking, if you’re maintaining 3 to 5 acres, an engine with 22-25hp is sufficient to provide enough power to maintain blade speed against thicker grass.

Ideal Bobcat models for a yard this size have a cutting deck of at least 51” and include the ZT3000, ZT3500 and ZT5000.

For five acres or more a 25-35+ horsepower engine is better suited as it helps maintain consistent cut quality at faster ground speeds and reduces strain during long mowing sessions.

Ideal Bobcat models for a yard in excess of five acres have at least a 52” cutting deck and include the ZT6000, ZT6100 and the ZT7000.

All current Bobcat mowers are powered by Kawasaki engines, with the exception of the Bobcat ZT6000e, which is fully electric.

FR Engines are found on the Bobcat ZT 2000.

Starting a Bobcat/Kawasaki engine is straightforward and is mostly consistent across models and platforms. Before getting started it’s always recommended that you consult the owner’s manual for information and always wear PPE (personal protective equipment).

Step One
Sit (or stand) in the operator position and ensure the brake is set.

Step Two
Make sure the blade engagement (PTO) switch/lever is in the OFF position.

Step Three
Move the control levers to the neutral position.

Step Four
Turn the key and you’re ready to go.

The right amount of power lets you mow faster, cut cleaner and reduce strain on the machine over time. The horsepower a zero-turn mower needs depends on property size, grass conditions and how fast you want to mow, not just the mower itself. 


1-2 acres
For up to 1 to 2 acres, 18–23 horsepower is sufficient for maintaining cut quality at moderate speeds in typical residential conditions.


2-4 acres
If you’re mowing 2 to 4 acres, a 20-24 horsepower engine is ideal for providing enough power to run wider decks and handle thicker grass without bogging down.


4+ acres and/or commercial operation
Operating commercially, and maintaining in excess of 4 acres, a 25+ horsepower engine is desirable as higher horsepower keeps blade speed consistent at faster ground speeds during long mowing sessions.

The biggest factors impacting longevity are engine quality, cooling efficiency and regular service intervals. A well-built engine that’s maintained on schedule will outlast lighter-duty engines by hundreds, if not thousands of hours especially in commercial zero-turn applications.

Generally speaking:


Residential engines
Residential engines typically last 500-1,000 hours, which is about 5-10 years for a homeowner mowing weekly. 


Prosumer engines
Prosumer engines often reach 1,000-2,000 hours of use with moderate workloads. 


Commercial engines
Commercial grade engines can last up to (and beyond) 3,000 hours when consistently and expertly maintained.

When performance, reliability and repair costs start adding up, you’ll know your engine is near the end of its life.

Yes. Engine specifications do differ across Bobcat zero-turn platforms, and they’re intentionally matched to the workload of each model.

As you move up the zero-turn lineup, engines increase in horsepower, torque capacity and durability class, progressing from residential and prosumer Kawasaki® FR/FS engines to heavier-duty FT engines, and ultimately to full commercial FX and FX EFI engines. Higher zero-turn models also pair those engines with larger deck options and commercial drivetrains, which require stronger engines to maintain performance.
